Nutraceutical applications of Phyllanthus maderaspatensis: A Review

Abstract:

Traditional healers treat many disorders and other diseases with important medicinal herbs. One such herb is Phyllanthus maderaspatensi in Phyllanthus family and is known to contain several pharmacologically vital bioactive compounds that play an important role in human health care. P. maderaspatensis, though not a widely commercialized crop, holds notable economic potential due to its established role in traditional medicine and emerging possibilities in floriculture. P. maderaspatensis can be used as face packs or cleansers with antibacterial properties. Anti-aging creams are made with antioxidant-rich extracts with this herb. Natural dyes derived from this pigment for eco-friendly cosmetic tinting in future usages. The richness of secondary metabolites in shoot and root of P. maderaspatensis is reported as 66.6% and 57.1% respectively. It is widely used to treat liver disorders, headache, constipation, diarrhoea, edematous, dysentery, fever, ulcer, burn, scabies and other diseases in Ayurveda and Unani. Alkaloids, carbohydrates, steroids, phenolics, gums, proteins, flavonoids, lignins, and mucilages are present in P. maderaspatensis. Leaves or aerial parts can be used in wellness teas designed for detoxification, liver support, and antioxidant benefits. Lignans in P. maderaspatensis are considered as an interesting source for lead structures to new herbal drugs and of interest as drugs in the area of cancer chemotherapy. Apart from the medicinal values, it is a viable candidate for the bio fuel production and eco-friendly paper. P. maderaspatensis have been used as mosquitoes repellent and can be utilized in organic fertilizers or compost, enhancing soil fertility and promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices. This review particularly deals with the bioactive compounds, value added products medicinal significance and therapeutic potential of P. maderaspatensis by reducing plastic waste and minimizing pollution.
