Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for a large proportion of rural populations in developing countries. However, small and medium farmers face multiple challenges such as declining soil fertility, climate variability, rising input costs, and unstable farm income. Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) have emerged as a sustainable approach to enhance productivity, profitability, and resilience of farming systems. IFS integrates various agricultural enterprises such as crops, livestock, poultry, fisheries, horticulture, and agroforestry within a single farm unit to ensure efficient resource utilization and recycling. The system promotes ecological balance while generating diversified income sources for farmers. This review examines the concept, components, benefits, and challenges of integrated farming systems with special emphasis on their role in improving sustainable livelihoods for small and medium farmers. The analysis highlights that IFS contributes to improved farm productivity, increased employment opportunities, enhanced food and nutritional security, and environmental sustainability. Adoption of integrated farming systems supported by institutional and policy interventions can significantly enhance the economic resilience of smallholder farmers.
