Abstract:

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly transforming forest management by enabling real-time data collection, advanced analytics, and integrated decision-making systems. Forests, covering nearly one-third of the Earth’s land surface, play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihood support, yet face mounting pressures from deforestation, forest fires, illegal logging, and climate change. ICT tools such as satellite remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), drones, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, artificial intelligence, and mobile-based platforms enhance monitoring accuracy, operational efficiency, and governance transparency. These technologies support forest growth modeling, carbon accounting, biodiversity assessment, and supply chain traceability while strengthening early warning systems for fires and encroachment. ICT-enabled geospatial analysis facilitates landscape-level planning, hotspot identification, and ecosystem-based management. Participatory monitoring platforms further empower local communities by improving data coverage and accountability. In addition, digital governance portals streamline forest clearances, regulatory compliance, and public grievance systems. Despite challenges including infrastructure gaps, technical capacity limitations, and data security concerns, the integration of emerging technologies such as machine learning and blockchain presents new opportunities for sustainable and climate-resilient forestry. Overall, ICT serves as a strategic enabler for enhancing productivity, transparency, and ecological integrity in modern forest management systems.
