Agricultural residues represent a critical but underutilized resource in global agricultural systems, with over 500 million tonnes generated annually in India alone. This article examines decentralized value addition of agricultural residues as a strategic pathway toward rural sustainability. Drawing on emerging technologies, policy frameworks, and case studies from South Asia, it demonstrates that small-scale, community-level processing of crop residues, animal waste, and agro-industrial byproducts can simultaneously address environmental degradation, rural poverty, and energy insecurity. Integrating biorefinery approaches, circular economy principles, and agripreneurship models at the village level presents tangible opportunities for income generation, improved livelihoods, and climate resilience. Realizing this potential, however, requires bridging critical gaps in technology access, market infrastructure, policy coherence, and gender-inclusive participation. Synthesizing recent research and international best practices, the article argues that decentralized value addition is not merely an environmental intervention but a fundamental mechanism for rural transformation aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
