More than 800 species of fungi are known to cause plant diseases. Fungal pathogens are among the major biological constraints to crop productivity, accounting for nearly 20-30% of annual crop losses worldwide. Genera such as Fusarium, Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Rhizoctonia, Sclerotium, Puccinia, and Ustilago are associated with economically important diseases affecting roots, stems, leaves, and reproductive organs. Their pathogenicity involves diverse mechanisms, including vascular colonization, tissue invasion, necrosis, nutrient acquisition, and formation of specialized survival structures. These pathogens persist and spread through soil, seed, crop residues, rain splash, and wind, enabling rapid disease establishment. Increasing disease pressure under changing climatic conditions highlights the need for accurate diagnosis and integrated management to minimize crop losses and sustain agricultural productivity.
